January 16, 1501
“…Today we are departing from India on what I and my crew believe to be the best part of all our journeys, the trip home. We have brought many of the items we gained through trade and stored them on my vessel along with a small amount of Brazil wood that is left over from our exchanges…”

June 23, 1501
“…We have arrived home today with only four of the 13 vessels we had at the start of our journey. It has been a rough travel but with all the new technologies we have uncovered in the various lands it has been well worth while…”

”…So we have moved further south in attempt to begin trade. We are in Cochin and here we are going to establish a trading post because we have noticed the people are much kinder here and not as strict to beliefs. Through this trading post we have gained many new goods that are foreign to Portugal so we plan to bring them back to our homeland. We have used most of what we have left of the Brazil wood to trade with the locals and we have received many new spices and goods…”
“…Also we have made an immense number of Peace treaties with the people and I think that is the main reason why we have been welcome here so long. It has helped us to trade peacefully. We respect the government and its rules to the extent of which our beliefs allow and in return we are making the economy here stronger…”

“…As we are now making our way to India we have witnessed another of our vessels stray from the rest of the ships…”

September 13, 1500
“…We have officially arrived to India and are currently in Calicut…”

“…When we arrived we were immediately faced with a number of different obstacles from the Muslims because they condemn our religion and we were not accepted unless we were to convert. We were not about to subject ourselves to this unfair recommendation…”

“…On July 26th we were not able to make an agreement with the ruler when we reached Kilwa because of conflicts in our cultures such as differing views in religion. Today we are now at Melinde and are experiencing an unexpected friendly welcome from the people of this land. My people have just come to me with and incredible message that they have found a pilot willing and able to take us to India. This pilot was very kind to us and he introduced us to mathematics and arithmetic along the way as well as many of the writings that the great rulers have created and they were all very influential and created a drive in all of my crew to begin writing of their journey just as I have been doing…”

“…Today we reached Sofala and in 4 days we expect to reach Mozambique which will be the 20th of July…”

“… We have reached Mozambique; although we were afraid that we would not be welcome we have received a cordial greeting of the people…”

“…One month ago was the last time we have seen the land of Brazil. We are now sailing eastward to India and as we approach the Cape of Good Hope we are met by these violent storms once again. In this encounter I lost four of my vessels and hundreds of men. On the ships we had stored a great abundance of Brazil wood and all of it was lost with the four vessels except for just a small amount we stored on another ship….”

“…We have rested on this new land for nearly 10 days and in our time here me and my crew have discovered something my merchants are calling Terra do Brazil or as I like to call Brazil wood. They are using it to create this red dye for clothing. This wood has become so popular among us that I have decided to name this land Brazil…”
“…Now we must leave and continue on in our journey to India…”
